Yogo Ichiba was a merchant of the Scorpion Clan, widely considered to be the greatest financial mastermind his Clan ever produced. [1]
Merchan Patron[]
Ichiba was born around 1100, and rose to prominence early, prior to the Scorpion Coup. He was a silk merchant with honeyed words and a disarming smile, who wished to become the single most successful merchant patron the clan had ever known. [2]
Turning Point[]
Ichiba lost a lucrative deal to a Daidoji merchant who mocked the Scorpion. Using maddened dogs, Ichiba killed the Crane's steed and packhorses. The Daidoji blamed the attack on the inn's owner and Ichiba became the new patron. Ichiba used the remains of the horses to make a saddle for his own horse. The event was a turning point in Ichiba's life. He embraced the most ruthless, deceitful methods possible, utilizing them to brutal effect. [2]
Hidden[]
The Scorpion Coup's aftermath drove Ichiba into hiding, and his holdings were seized by his many enemies. He had secretly relocated his most valuable merchandise to hidden caves in the Spine of the World Mountains. From there Ichiba and his agents destroyed his enemies. Ichiba also reorganized the Karandetsu Market and its merchants were considered a particularly devious and successful lot who resorted to illegal practices. When the Scorpion were reinstated, he returned to business with far fewer competitors. [3]
Burning Sands[]
When his clan was exiled, Ichiba survived the trip to the Burning Sands, and quickly served their captors, the Senpet, as a liaison rather than a miner. Trading in gaijin wares, Ichiba came out of the Scorpion exile as one of the richest men in Rokugan. [2]
Scorpion Agent[]
From time to time, Ichiba was given a name by the Scorpion leaders. He spared no expense to achieve the utter destruction of that individual. While Ichiba certainly was loyal, he mostly did these jobs because he enjoyed them. [2] In the Four Winds era Ichiba was under the command of the Yogo Daimyo, Yogo Koji. [4] [5]
Shadowed Tower[]
In 1159 the monk Chian had revealed to Miya Hatori and his aides Fuzake Sekkou and Otomo Taneji the existence of the Shadowed Tower. Chian and Ichiba met Hatori at Ryoko Owari Toshi. They informed him that the Scorpion had revealed to Hatori their inner conflict, expecting he would understand it was a Scorpion matter, and that he had to keep others away. [6]
Trading with the Crane[]
In 1170 Ichiba ended a negotiation with the Crane courtier Naoharu in the village of Ginasutra. [7]
Death[]
The exact date of Ichiba's death was not known, but his trading organization, Ichiba's Consortium, survived. [1]
