The Yobanjin were tribes of barbarians who lived in the Great Wall of the North mountains, [1] beyond the northern border of Rokugan, descendants of those who would not bow to the Emperor and thus were banished. From time to time they performed raids against the Phoenix lands, being punished by the Rokugani. [2] It was known that they carved animal bones as their own way of sculpture. [3]

Term[]

The term Yobanjin was originally used to refer to the peoples who would not bow to the whims of the fledgling Empire, who were thought to number near 40,000 across all of the tribes and groups. “Yoban” means 40,000, and “Jin” means people. It was Hantei Genji, who, concerned over the possibility of enemies from within the Empire, decreed that all within the recorded borders of his father's Empire were now his people. He decreed that any who did not submit to the rule of the samurai class were banished from Rokugan and forbidden to return. Those who submitted peacefully were granted leave to go north in search of new lands through the pass that came to be known as Defiant's Path. The tribes that refused to bow to the Great Clans were instead driven out from their homelands or conquered. The descendants of those who were pushed out over this decree were known as Yobanjin, the people who would not bow. Most Yobanjin populated the Great Wall of the North and the lands beyond. [4]

Appearance[]

Yobanjin warriors used to wear wooden masks, tunics, and teardrop-shaped earrings on their tattooed faces. [2]

Magic[]

Yobanjin used some kind of sorcery not related with the kami. [2]
