The Crane-Crab War, also known as the Yasuki War, [1] was one of the first interclan wars in the Emerald Empire. [2]
Preambles[]
In the late fourth century the Emperor Hantei Fujiwa sought to check the power of a secret cabal of samurai called the Gozoku, which had usurped his own authority. He decided to do so by breaking the internal unity of one of the chief Gozoku backers, the Crane Clan, driving a wedge between the courtly Doji family and the mercantile Yasuki family. Under Fujiwa's bidding, the loyal Crab Clan expanded its borders, and open warfare erupted when the Crab seized the Yasuki lands, claiming the Crane had no need for them. [3]
Yasuki Defection[]
Altercations between the Crane and Crab Clans over which clan had the right to control certain areas of land on their mutual borders escalated when, the Yasuki family, [1] chafing under the demands of the haughty Crane Clan, broke its ties with the Crane and offered fealty to the Crab, who eagerly accepted. [4] The Yasuki Daimyō had had a longstanding rift with the Crane Champion, who repeatedly had told that the Yasuki was "of no service to his lord," [3] so the Yasuki Daimyō Yasuki Kiringu decided to join the Crab. [5]
Aftermath[]
The war led the Emperor Hantei Fujiw to forbid direct warfare between the Great Clans. [1] The war became a massive economic drain on all of Rokugan, as the Yasuki and the Crane locked down a major portion of the Imperial rice crop. The Gozoku had not been checked, and they grew in power until they eventually rendered Fujiwa a figurehead. [3]
