Yagura was the Rokugani term for tower. They reinforced the outer walls of a castle, the castle main gate was nearly always flanked by a pair of towers, and additional towers were placed at corners and other key defensive positions. The most formidable examples were the twelve great towers of the Kaiu Wall, each of which was a fortification as powerful as any castle in Rokugan. [1]

The height of the towers allowed the garrison to spot approaching foes at a greater distance and better outrange them with archery. They were defensive strongholds for repelling attacks, and they were rallying points for defenders in the event the castle was breached. The Crab also mounted siege weapons on towers, but this was rare elsewhere. [1]
