Yōkai, also known as Yūrei, [1] were Rokugani supernatural monsters, spirits, and demons. [2] This term refered to beings that may seem ordinary at first glance, but that actually possessed supernatural and often otherworldly qualities. [3] Spirit creatures fell under this group, [4] such as the Kitsu people or the mischievous fox-spirits. [5]
Classification[]
One school of thought favored by the Phoenix Clan's Shiba family divided yōkai by their origins, sorting them between “Transformed Beings,” “Nature Beings,” and “Tricksters” hailing from the Realm of Animals. Another classification, endorsed by the Agasha family of the Dragon Clan, categorized yōkai by their specific habitat or the element most strongly associated with them. [3]
