Hiruma Yōjimbō

A Yōjimbō

Yōjimbō was the Rokugani term for bodyguard. Shugenja used to have a yōjimbō to protect them from any danger. [1] The same applied for courtiers. Yōjimbō used to place themselves to the left of their charges, covering the undefended side. [2] A yōjimbō was also sworn to protect their charge's honor, even unto death. [3] They were also likely to serve as the proxy of their charges in duels of honor, and had the grim task of acting as their lord's second should they need to commit seppuku, decapitating them to end their suffering. Most followed their master even into death, should they not have the chance to die in their service. [4]
