The Utaku was one of the families of the Unicorn Clan, formed by fierce battle maidens and youths trained in acrobatic styles of horsemanship and war. They were renowned by their reckless demeanor. [1] During their journey outside the Empire Utaku Shiko's horde was known as the Purple Horde. [2] Battle Maiden Palace was their ancestral seat of power. [3]
Matriarchal Family[]
No other Unicorn family had so deeply and spiritually embraced Bushidō as the Utaku, who embodied it in their elite battle maidens, the shiotome. The matriarchal Utaku allowed only their women to ride to war; the Utaku men served afoot as infantry and in the stables and households. [4] Those who broke this law were cast out from the clan, becoming ronin. [5] The Utaku family forbade its daughters to marry men of higher status. [6]
Lands[]
The Utaku family's provinces covered the central and eastern plains of the Unicorn, vast and peaceful, but contained little of note. Farms, villages, and roads were sparse throughout the grassy countryside, leaving plenty of flat land. Only the westernmost lands featured foothills and fertile valleys, with rivers rolling down into the southern lands of the Ide. [3]
