Torture in Rokugan was considered a proper method of investigation, as well as a spiritually impure activity, due to the torturer touching blood and sweat, so it was only performed by members of the hinin caste. [1] Hinin torturers formed an important part of a magistrate's retinue. Because of their deep understanding of human anatomy and the many ways harm could be inflicted upon it, some torturers also became quite adept at assisting magistrates in investigations. [2]
