The Topaz Championship was the most prestigious gempukku ceremony in Rokugan. It was held in the village of Tsuma. [1] The winner claimed glory for themselves and their clan, and might even earn a high-ranking position in the Empire. [2]
Organization[]
The Topaz Championship spanned three days. Each event of the tournament was presided over a judge from one of the Great Clans, who rated the participants on their proficiency, gaining points in several ways. A contestant must earn several points to make their gempuku. [3]
First Day[]
During the first day, contestants would compete in sumai and heraldry, then the athletics foot race, followed by horseback riding. The day ended with the conduct contests. [3]
Second Day[]
During the second day the tournament displayed contest of weaponry (selecting a wooden weapon and spar to first palpable hit), poetry, law, Go and archery, and hunting (shugenja and monks were invited to return with valuable or rare medicinal herbs). [3]
Third Day[]
Competitors who earned the right to enter the third day, held a dueling contest to determine the actual winner of the Topaz Championship that year. Shugenja performed a parallel taryū-Jiai contest, and if the winner amassed more total points than the winner of the iaijutsu dueling competition, the the shugenja was named the Topaz Champion. [3]
