The Togashi family was the ruling family of the Dragon Clan. [1] The leadership of the Dragon had always passed to the most talented monk of the ise zumi. [2] The Togashi family was not, in fact, a true ‘family’ at all, but was more like a monastic order. Its members did not share a common bloodline traced from their Kami, but rather joined the family in response to particular calling, specific to that individual. [3]
Foundation[]
After the fall of the Kami, Togashi-no-Kami was joined by many followers. Three of them dedicated themselves entirely to learning from the Kami. One day, they pledged vows of eternal loyalty, and Togashi marked them with his mystical tattoos. In a distant mountain peak, in a place decided by the Kami, the three men labored an entire year to build the High House of Light, the seat of power of the Dragon Clan and their ruling family, the Togashi. [4]
Behaviour[]
The Togashi family were the oddest family in the Empire. Togashi monks and nuns wandered the Empire, known to all by their skill with kōan and the martial arts, as well as by the beautiful and mystical tattoos that granted them supernatural abilities. [5] Togashi monks endured hardship and privation, putting aside worldly concerns and desires in favor of contemplative pursuits. Some ise zumi choose paths so divergent from the essential beliefs and values of the family that they became effective outcasts. [6]
Territory[]
Unlike other Great Clan families, the lands of the Togashi were not subdivided into provinces but constituted a single province. They sprawled across the desolate, forbidding mountains of the Great Northern Climb. Their holdings were remote, isolated, and often difficult to access. There were few roads, and virtually no arable land. The landscape was bleak, essentially barren rock shaped by volcanic eruptions, rushing rivers and spectacular waterfalls. [7]
Notable Holdings[]
Togashi Daimyō[]
Since the founding of the Dragon Clan the daimyō of the Togashi family had been the Dragon Clan Champion.
