Togashi was son of Lord Moon and Lady Sun, and one of the Kami who fell to the mortal realm from the Celestial Heavens, alongside his siblings. [1]

Heavens[]

Since the beginning of time, Lord Moon chased Lady Sun about the world. One day, he caught her, and as her light faded, the curtain fell on the age of the ancient races. Over the course of countless seasons, Lady Sun gave birth [1] to ten children: Hida, Doji, Togashi, Akodo, Shiba, Bayushi, Shinjo, Fu Leng, Hantei, and Ryoshun. [2]

True Heritage[]

Lady Sun's heart was never earnestly won by Lord Moon, yet she promised him children, so children she gave him. Once, while Lady Sun was exploring the far reaches of the Heavens, she encountered a Lord from an unknown land he called Tian Guo, who was well-versed in poetry, and she fell in love. Lady Sun bore two children with him. The first, she gave the name Togashi to conceal his parentage from Lord Moon. The second, her lover requested to be named Fu Leng after the tongue of his people. When Lady Sun revealed the name of her youngest son to Lord Moon, he raged. With one mighty burst of anger, he sealed their Heavens from the Heavens beyond so Lady Sun would never be able to see her lover again. Fu Leng was openly despised by Lord Moon. Seeing the way Fu Leng was treated, Lady Sun never revealed Togashi shared the same father, except to Togashi himself. With him, she shared the philosophies of his father. [3]

Fall of the Kami[]

Legends told that the Moon, jealous over Lady Sun's love for their children, swallowed their Kami children. This day was the night with no light, when Amaterasu wept for her children. Amaterasu saved her final child, Hantei, from being swallowed to save his siblings. [4] Amaterasu trained Hantei in the martial arts. When Hantei and Lord Moon finally did battle, he sliced open his father's belly, and the rest of his siblings tumbled out. They fell from the sky to Seppun Hill, save for one. Lord Moon reached out at the last moment and grasped Fu Leng. Hantei swung his sword one last time and severed his father's very arm. Fu Leng tried to grab ahold of Hantei, and they both fell. Plummeting downward, Fu Leng plunged through the earth to Jigoku itself, where he was lost. [1] Ryoshun's name was lost to history. [2]

Founding Rokugan[]

The Creation of Mankind[]

In some places, the blood mixed with Lady Sun's tears, and from that mingling came the first men and women. [1]

Tournament of the Kami[]

No longer immortal, the Kami shared the mortal realm with human beings. They resolved to teach and guide these humans, and they held a great tournament to see who would lead those who lived in this land they dubbed Rokugan. [1] Togashi was said to be able to see the future, by which provenance he excused himself from the Tournament of the Kami. [5] He looked on from the sidelines, having foreseen the outcome. Hantei was the final victor, and after his coronation as Emperor, he charged each of his siblings with a different task. [1]

Dragon Clan[]

Mysteriously, Togashi retreated to the mountains, where he would watch over the Empire from afar. [1] Togashi used all his mother taught him to establish the Dragon Clan. Never feeling fully aligned with his half-siblings, Togashi secluded himself and his clan to the northern mountains, where he privately mourned the descent of Fu Leng and sought Enlightenment to bring him closer to his father and to the mortal land of his father's creation, Yún Fēng Guó. [3] Togashi founded the Dragon Clan to pursue his ideals of individualism, destiny, and the quest for Enlightenment. Mirumoto and Agasha were two of Togashi's early followers who founded families of their own. [6] Togashi valued solitude, a trait shared by all of his successors, and established his lands in the fringes of the range known as the Great Wall of the North. [7]

Togashi Family[]

Other men also followed Togashi, and three of them dedicated themselves entirely to learning from the Kami. One day, they pledged vows of eternal loyalty, and Togashi marked them with his mystical tattoos. In a distant mountain peak, in a place decided by the Kami, the three men labored an entire year to build the High House of Light, the seat of power of the Dragon Clan and their ruling family, the Togashi. [6] The Ise Zumi were tattooed with ink mixed with Togashi's blood, which gave these tattooes their mystical powers. [8]

War Against Fu Leng[]

But not long after the Kami had begun to order the world and formed clans with their earliest followers, Fu Leng emerged from his subterranean lair. He confronted Hantei because he had not been invited to the Tournament of the Kami, and challenged Hantei's right to rule Rokugan. Togashi was selected as the Emperor's Champion, who in turn selected all that lives in Rokugan as his weapon. [9] Fu Leng assaulted the Empire with his dark army from the place which would be known as the Shadowlands, but they were eventually repelled from Rokugan by the Seven Thunders on what became known as the Day of Thunder. [4]

Shinsei[]

Five years after the Kami fell from the Heavens, Togashi traveled to the remote and desolate northern mountains and sat in a high place, to meditate in solitude. He refused to eat, drink or sleep. Mirumoto and Agasha turned to Shinsei himself for help. [10] Togashi was visited by Shinsei, and the Little Teacher asked the Dragon Kami the reasons behind his isolation in the mountains. Togashi explained he would not move until he could understand, and Shinsei sat alongside him and said, 'Neither will I.' Nine days Shinsei was fasting and without moving, and on the tenth day Shinsei was near to death. Togashi understood that his quest for wisdom had affected the world around him. A plum blossom fell into his lap, and he was enlightened. [6] Shinsei and Shosuro had returned with the Black Scrolls, and they were met by Kuni himself in the presence of Togashi. Before succumbing to her wounds, Shosuro gave Kuni an account of the battle between the Thunders and Fu Leng. They kept the record secret, guarded. [11] Shosuro's account was written in one of the Asako family cyphers by Lady Asako herself. Shinsei's plan was to buy time. Time for ‘Togashi's Duel.’ Time for the next Day of Thunder. [12]

The Final Riddle[]

Shinsei was said to have told the so-called Final Riddle to Togashi before he left the Empire, and the answer to which would define the meaning of existence. Under Togashi's command Furthest Fortress, and the secret of the Last Riddle was hidden within a vault built in the fortress. [13]

Children[]

Togashi Hoshi was the immortal son of Togashi. [6]

The Eternal Kami[]

In the case of the other Great Clans, their founding Kami eventually departed the mortal realm, leaving their descendants to carry on their bloodline, and lead their clans. Not so Togashi, who remained in the mortal realm. This was only known for a choice few samurai. [14] Having accepted Fu Leng's challenge to battle for ultimate control of it, Togashi was bound to remain in the Mortal Realm until that challenge was resolved. [15]

Mortal Champions[]

In the 12th century Togashi took the persona of Togashi Gaijutsu, a blind tattoo master, to tattoo and guide his mortal champions. [16] Togashi was able to possess the mortal forms of those he had tattooed, but did so only in times of great need. [17]
