The Maw was a powerful Oni Lord which undoubtedly had a name, but that had been lost to time. [1] The monster raised an army in 716 and marched upon the Crab. [2] Their forces were stopped in the River of the Last Stand, the place where the Crab built the actual Kaiu Wall. [3]
Leadership[]
The Maw beat the squabbling lieutenants of Fu Leng of the Shadowlands into submission, raising an army of unprecedented size and power under its cunning and ruthless leadership. The Maw called numerous oni directly from the depths of Jigoku, including the dreaded Atsumari no Oni. [4]
Preambles[]
In the previous year the Shadowlands had tested the Crab defenses in several skirmishes, including the Battle of the Tidal Landbridge. [5]
Assault of the Maw[]
Under the Maw's cunning leadership, its horde revealed the First Wall's shortcomings. Fortress after fortress fell to the unrelenting offensive. On Last Stand Plain, the bulk of the Hiruma army was lost to the Maw's forces. The Maw swept across Crab lands, pushing the clan's lines so far north that Daylight Castle was laid siege and lost entirely. The Maw employed demonic allies to corrupt and reanimate the corpses of the fallen to attack on their former kin. The Crab finally stopped the Maw and its army at the River of the Last Stand, defeating them in what would become known as the Battle of the Cresting Wave. [6] The combined forces of the Hiruma and Hida, reinforced with Kuni Purifiers and Witch Hunters, had stopped the foul advance, and the Kaiu built the Carpenter Wall. The Hiruma lands were never recovered, marking the first loss of territory since the founding of the Empire. [5] The Maw was destroyed, ending the threat. [2]
Skull[]
The Crab seized the skull of the Maw, which was displayed as a trophy above the main entrance of Kyūden Hida. [7]
