Taikomochi, “drum-bearer,” was the Rokugani term for male geisha. They emulated the ideal Rokugani male: loud, boisterous, and good-humored, they told jokes, performed outrageous stories, and flattered their guests. In Rokugan, to “beat the drum” was to flatter someone, something the taikomochi were trained to do. Taikomochi also mastered percussion. [1]
