Suijin, was the Fortune of the Sea. [1] In some places he was known as Suitengu. [2] The ocean lord was created after Onnotangu and Amaterasu named the earth, becoming part of the shinzoku, or tribe of the gods, who attended them in the Heavens. [3] He was depicted as an old man with wild hair and a long beard, being notoriously fickle and tempestuous. Fishers offered rice as they set sail to appease him for trespassing on his domain. When angered, Suijin summoned storms and terrible waves, but renewed life always followed his tantrums. [4] Suijin was usually depicted with his lover Isora, the Fortune of the Shore, a jade kobune ship for Suijin and eternal flames for Isora. [5]
