The Striking as Earth kata drew upon the cast inner reserves of Earth within the body. Although earth was shielded from harm it also often failed to perceive the world around it causing the user of the kata to become more protected by its motions, but less observant of the events going on around him. The Striking as Earth was a Rank 1 general kata which taught a bushi to root, hunkering down to make sure their armor took the brunt of a hit or raising a weapon in a warding position where it could deflect harm without being damaged. [2]
