Soshi Kochoko of House Nanbu, born Kochohime, was the daughter of Tzurui and Iuchi Ochiyo. Kochohime's mother was very sick when she gave birth, which caused Ochiyo's death. Tzurui pledged his life to Kochohime, which caused him to dishonor himself in a battle by failing to protect his master. [1]

Ronin[]

From that point on, Kochohime was handed over to Hanoshi [2] and she was cared for by monks while her father battled to regain his honor, but also to have the girl kept safe when the family was dissolved. Her time with the monks taught her patience. [3]

Monkey Clan[]

She was recalled by her father once he found a safe home among the Monkey Clan, and raised among the strange wisdom of the minor Clan. [3] In her childhood Kochoko was friend of Toku's daughter, Toku Miyako. [4]

Nanbu Daimyo[]

After Tzurui's death during the final days of the War of Spirits in 1150, his friend the Monkey Clan Champion Toku sent a request to the new Soshi Daimyo, Soshi Uidori. Kochoko was called to take the position of Nanbu family daimyo and returned to the Soshi provinces. [3]

She had few ambitions outside of protecting her fledgling family, and her greatest desire was to see her family's holdings restored and made fertile again. Although she would never admit it, she harbored a slight grudge against her clan for abandoning her family during the Scorpion Coup, and it was for this reason that she kept abreast of goings-on within the Scorpion Clan. [3]

Destroyer War[]

In 1173 during the Destroyer War Kochoko was appointed to defend the Temple of the Virtuous Maiden in the Crane lands. Despite her efforts the men she commanded were so few that the Scorpion withdrew. Kochoko visited her childhood friend, Bayushi Miyako, currently the acting Scorpion Clan Champion, to request explanations about the deployment of the Scorpion forces. Miyako told she had devised a plan, that obliged to let the Destroyers to advance into the empire. When they were exposed enough the Scorpion would assault them from all sides. [4]
