The rank of Shireikan designated the commander of an army under the command of a rikugunshokan or daimyo. A shireikan controlled five taisa and their troops, or approximately 125,000 soldiers. Unit size varied depending on the army and time period; each taisa commanded between 500 and 40,000 troops, but commonly commanded about 25,000 troops.
Shireikan were commonly members of a daimyo's personal staff, although low ranking ones. The Shireikan often had a small unit of personal guards, and might even own a large castle. [1]
