Shinseism was a religion and philosophy in Rokugan, based in the Tao of Shinsei. [1] Some of its sects were considered potentially dangerous and heretical. [2]
Philosophy[]
Shinseism was an ideology which taught that all the universe comes from the Void, and all would eventually return to it. Embracing the oneness of the five elements, or Rings, and living in accordance with the principles of an ordered society could enable one to transcend the cycle of rebirth and attain Enlightenment. [3] The soul of every extant human, demon, animal, ancestor spirit, and god had always existed, repeatedly reincarnating upon death. Shinsei theorized that all karma was "bad," and that every action generated karma, which bounnd the individual to the reincarnation cycle, although actions motivated by fear, regret, or especially desire generated more. [4]
Merged[]
This philosophy stood in contradiction to the common worship of the founder Kami and the theory of the Celestial Order on certain points of cosmological order. [5] During the rule of Hantei Genji the religion of the Seven Fortunes, the ancestor worship, and the words of the Tao were merged. [3]
Shinseist Temples[]
Shinseist sanctuaries were community centers as well as spiritual centers. They taught religious doctrine and practice to community members. Monks and especially priests officiated at offerings, scripture readings, festivals, weddings, and funerals. Local priests counseled Shinseists in mental or spiritual crisis. Mendicant monks carried news and mail from place to place. [6]
