Shinjo Etsuma was a night guard on the uppermost level of the Shinomen Tower, a duty posting for unimportant or aging samurai. In 1198 during the opening phase of the War of Serpents he found his kin Moto Ogama pierced by arrows, and he died shortly after when a rain of flaming arrows fired by the Dark Naga reached the tower.
