Shiba Akifusa was a duelist of the Phoenix Clan. Akifusa possessed Mizutsumi, a katana that was a powerful nemuranai. [1]

Akifusa was a young student at the Whispering Blade Dōjō in Lonely Shore City. Mirumoto Ikutsuki was very much their superior with a sword than his classmates and supremely arrogant about it. The other students conspired to discredit their prideful classmate, who was caught out in an embarrassing situation involving the spouse of one of their teachers, intending only to teach him some humility. Instead, matters quickly spiraled out of control, and Ikutsuki was not only cast out of the dōjō; he was cast out of his clan as well, as a rōnin, under the name of Hagane. Akifusa was not involved in carrying out the plot against Ikutsuki, save by helping cover it up. [2]

Nearly fourty years later Akifusa lived at Nikesake, and there he was attacked by the vengeful spirit of Hagane, which had escaped from the underworld. A group of samurai helped Akifusa to confront the assailant. [3]
