The Seppun family was one of the Imperial Families, [1] founded by Seppun, one of the original followers of Hantei-no-Kami. [2] Kyūden Seppun was their ancestral seat of power. [3]
Duty[]
When the divine Kami fell into the Realm of Mortals from the Celestial Heavens, they took on some of the vulnerabilities of mortals. The Seppun therefore took it upon themselves to guard and protect the Kami. The Seppun established two basic types of protectors: the Palace Guard, or Seppun Honor Guard, who formed the personal bodyguard of the Emperor and protect the Hantei from physical threats, and the Hidden Guard, who guarded the Emperor against spiritual and supernatural threats. [4] Their astrologers, the Onmyōji were recognized as diviners, reading the future from the stars. [5] They also supported the Right Hand of the Emperor to settle skirmishes between armies and defend Rokugan against foreign invaders like Yobanjin. [6]
Influence[]
Many members of the Imperial bureaucracy were from the Seppun family, and more notable was the devotion of the Seppun to the teachings of Shinsei, among the most devoted adherents of Shinseism and the most fervent guardians of its teachings and records. The Seppun also maintained a vast Imperial Library, focused on the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of those involved in past events. [4]
