A scout

Scouts were soldiers who explored the area before the main army arrived, and acted as the eyes of an army performing reconnaissance duties. [1] Scouts were light troops whose missions were to report on terrain conditions in their path of advance, to locate the enemy, provide information about their intentions or composition [2] and also to destroy or deny the enemy from doing the same to their army. In some cases scouts would raid supply elements or rear areas of the enemy, tying down defensive troops who could be better used elsewhere. Scouts were generally not as heavily armed or armored as bushi, as they would relied on speed and stealth for security. [citation needed]
