The Samurai Quarter of Toshi no Naishou was a confusing and tangled network of streets which surrounded the Governor's Palace, and in turn was surrounded by the Merchant District. It sat on a rocky promontory and the quarter was delimited by a small stone wall with a single gate, guarded by Lion bushi. As the samurai population had waxed and waned some parts of the district fell into disrepair while others enjoyed renewal. It was crossed by the Itochu River, where small ferry-boats moved customers from one part of the quarter to another. [1] It was customary that newcomers loudly announced his name and parentage as a kind of general introduction, and habit arisen during the troubled period when the city changed hands several times in succession.
