Sakkaku, the Realm of Illusion, [1] was one of the three senkyō, or "enchanted country". [2] It embraced the form of animals and played jokes and tricks on other mortals while seeking the power to break the cycle of rebirth, so that they might remain as animals forever. [3]

Relationship with Chikushō-dō[]

Chikushō-dō, the Animal's Path and Sakkaku, were in fact political categories, not regions, though their adherents did control certain territories. Chikushō-dō's animals were committed to living, and helping one another live, lives of virtue and service that would guarantee them better rebirth. Many, especially among their leadership, were laid Shinseists. Sakkaku's adherents believed their animal incarnations were ideal, their final and perfect forms. They thought that embracing their animal natures and achieving immortality in their current life was the best use of their time. Each one, while made up of individuals rather than territory, dominated some Rokugani wildernesses, kept out of others, and struggled with their opposite numbers to claim contested territory. Historically, a Great Tengu had usually been in charge of each court, though that office had sometimes passed to an animal spirit of some other species. [2]

Adherents[]

The denizens of Sakkaku were mischievous or malicious tricksters who turned humans' folly against them, dedicated opponents of humanity's attempt to dominate the natural world. They guarded the natural world against human incursion, they took pride in what they were and the life they had, and plotted civilization's downfall, especially through trickery. [4] Kumo, [5] and Mujina adhered to this court. [6]

Portals[]

The Needle's Eye Forest in the Crane lands was a well-known dwelling of the mischievous beings of Sakkaku. [7] Kyūden Asako and the Aokami Forest were also known passages to Ningen-dō. [8]
