Battles of Rokugan

The Rice War was the last step of the Crab struggling during the Great Famine.

Preambles Edit

The bad weather during three years and the punitive taxes levied by the Emperor Hantei XX had depleted the food reserves of the Crab. The Yasuki Merchants had begun a trade war for the rice supply, which was countered by the Daidoji. [1]

Open War Edit

In 662 the Crab Clan Champion Hida Tsuneko was mocked in the Imperial winter court when she made a desperate plea to alleviate the Clan's hunger. In 663 the Yasuki began to use illegal means to shut out opponent Crane merchants from the markets, and the Daidoji retaliated in the same way. The economical dispute escalated to open war when Tsuneko invaded the Crane lands. [2]

Initial success Edit

The Crab overrun much of the southern Crane lands seizing Jukami Mura in the Battle of Honor's Flight. The Daidoji Daimyo, Daidoji Katsunan, was cut down by Tsuneko herself. [3]

Crab defeat Edit

Starvation drove the Crab troops to fight with desperate ferocity, reaching the outskirts of Mura Sabishii Toshi. The Emperor sent the Imperial Legions to support the defenders, so Tsuneko admitted defeat to avoid battling the well fed Imperial armies. [3]
