Founded: Unknown
Daimyo: Otomo Sorai

The Otomo family was the second of the Imperial families to be founded, [1] created by Otomo, one of the original followers of Hantei-no-Kami. [2] The Otomo Palace was their ancestral seat of power. [3]

Duty[]

The Otomo existed to sow dissent among the clans, preventing them from ever uniting against the Emperor. [4] They employed flattery and favors, but did not hesitate to employ underhanded tactics as well, such as deception, bribery, and blackmail. [1] They also supported the Left Hand of the Emperor to draft laws in the Hantei's name, issue edicts on their behalf, and exert political influence upon others in support of the Throne. [5]

Influence[]

Many key positions in the Imperial bureaucracy were filled from the ranks of the Otomo family. Music, art, and literature created by members of the Otomo family were some of the most influential in Rokugan, rivaling even those of the Crane Clan. To the Otomo, beauty was simply another tool for either gaining power or ensuring that power did not go to those who should not have it. [1]

Within the Otomo[]

Otomo Mon[]

The mon of the Otomo represented four coiled snakes. [6]

Ritual of Abdication[]

One important Imperial custom was the adoption of the Otomo name by those younger children of the Emperor who were not expected to inherit the Throne. Following the Ritual of Abdication, such younger Imperial siblings usually joined the Otomo family, undergoing gempuku regardless of their age and taking the Otomo name. [1]
