Otomo Madoko was an Imperial Matchmaker and a powerful force in the Imperial Court during the reigns of Hantei XIX through Hantei XXII. [1]
Otomo Family[]
Born in the year 640, Madoka was a younger daughter of Hantei XIX. She was 10 years old when her brother ascended to the throne and became Emperor Hantei XX. She joined the Otomo family as Otomo Madoka. Her brother showed extreme favoritism to the Crane, which undermined the political power of her new family. She used her position as a nakodo to maintain Otomo relevance in the Imperial courts. [2]
Great Famine[]
In the year 660 a Great Famine began, and Madoko questioned whether the Otomo family's traditional drive to put the clans at each other’s throats had gone too far. In 665 Madoka offered her services to Master of Earth Isawa Michikata, who restored the Empire's croplands in return for prestigious marriage arrangements for all his children. Michikata. [3]
Book of Sun Tao[]
Madoko studied the Book of Sun Tao and in 689, was dared by a Lion diplomat to compare the book to court politics. Recognizing the parallels between a bushi on the battlefield and a courtier in the midst of court, Madoko wrote Subtlety of Court, [4] [5] which was considered an essential guide to courtly life. [1]
