Onryō were Rokugani vengenful ghosts of Tōshigoku who punished the living. They could not pass through salt circles and they must avoid a lantern's light. Onryō were stronger at certain hours and weaker during others. [1] They drew strength from their hatred and their desire for vengeance, and, because of this, they frequently found their way out and into the Realm of Mortals, where they sought whoever wronged them. [2] The ghost of a person who died in extreme circumstances was usually bound to a violent betrayal that was their last experience in life and consumed by the need for vengeance. The onryō was incapable of reason and inflicts its curse on everyone with whom it comes into contact. [3]
