Obsidian
Obsidian was the blood of Lord Moon which fell to Ningen-dō and laid alone. [1] It was a precious stone associated with darkness, chaos, negative emotion, [2] and the taint and Shadowlands creatures such as the oni. [3] It was the most powerful bane to denizens of other Spirit Realms, but it also carried with it a hint of Lord Moon's madness, which, through prolonged exposure, it passed on to the carrier. [4] Obsidian did not always bore the corruption of Jigoku, but this mystical stone drew negative emotions and powers to it, absorbing and amplifying them. This included the boundless hatred of Fu Leng and his countless dread servitors—so virtually all obsidian in the Emerald Empire contained the essence of the Shadowlands. [5] As jade slowly decayed in the presence of the Taint, or quickly within the Shadowlands, obsidian also perished, though in this case, it was from exposure to sacred lands. It most commonly transformed into black smoke. [6]
Obsidian Ink[]
Obsidian inksticks, which contained pulverized obsidian in addition to the usual ingredients, were insidiously visually identical to ordinary inksticks. When mixed with water on an inkstone, the resulting obsidian ink temporarily bestowed the spiritual properties of obsidian on any scroll, canvas, or other surface. But when blood was used instead of water, the resulting ink attracted kansen and imbued mahō rituals with even greater power. [6]
