Musha Shugyō, “warrior's pilgrimage”, was when a clan samurai, with the permission of their daimyō, left behind all of his allegiances and wandered the Empire as a rōnin to learn as much as possible while perfecting their skills as a warrior. Once the requirements of the musha shugyō were fulfilled, the rōnin returned to their clan as a samurai. [1] A warrior on the warrior pilgrimage wais called a shugyōsha. [2]
