Mono no aware, 'the pathos of things', was a Rokugani term to define their sense of 'place'. The term was based upon a deep affinity with nature and beauty, and a spontaneous, emotional response towards them. Their basic tenets were nature was beautiful, nature was harmonious, and nature could have an ethical or moral dimension. These beliefs were shaped in the Empire through the Shinseism and the acceptance of the Celestial Order. Its antithesis was the Shadowlands, the called Komai no aware, the 'removal of things'. [1]
