Miwaku Kabe
The Enchanted Wall surrounded the inner districts of Otosan Uchi, the Ekohikei, [1] guarded by members of the Lion Clan. [2] It was built with sloped sides originally intended to make buildings resistant to earthquakes (to which the Imperial City was prone). [3]
Creation[]
The Enchanted Wall was originally built during the First War at the command of Hantei himself. He chose four of the Great Clans, the Crane, Crab, Ki-Rin, and Phoenix, to build the walls. Isawa shugenja were heavily involved in the construction of the wall, and as a result, all four sides incorporated spiritual powers. [4] It was built to keep the Forbidden City safe. Phantom forms would emerge from the ground to kill any who dared to attack. [5]
Walls[]
The Southern Gate was the main gate into the Forbidden City. It was located at the juncture of the Southern Wall and the Eastern Wall, allowing entry from the Chisei and Kanjo Districts. [4]
The Eastern Wall[]
The Eastern Wall drew its strength from the gloriousness of those who had stood to defend it. Golden kanji adorned the wall's surface, naming every samurai who had fallen defending it. It was believed that their spirits resided within the wall, ready to take up arms in defense of the city when they were needed again. [6]
The Southern Wall[]
The Southern Wall was consecrated by the lives of Isawa Naigama and his pupils. When the forces of Fu Leng assaulted the city, the wall seemingly came to life to strike them down or disappeared. In the intervening centuries, the Asahina Artificers had tried to determine what became of the lost horde, for the spirits of the wall had so far been silent on the matter. [6]
The Western Wall[]
The Western Wall contained the bound and imprisoned spirits of the Shadowlands creatures that perished while assaulting the city in the First War. A faint, eerie wailing sometimes emerged from the outside surface of the wall, audible in the nearby districts of the Toshisoto. Many shugenja had studied the wall, but no one determined whether it was dangerous or not. The closest neighborhoods tended to be sparsely populated. [6]
The Northern Wall[]
The Northern Wall was destroyed by Fu Leng's forces during the First War and rebuilt afterward. It had not exhibited any supernatural capabilities in the centuries since that time. This wall was built primarily by the Crab and was riddled with tunnels, mazes, traps, and ambush areas. [6]
