Minor Clans were sometimes created through a schism from a larger clan, an accident of inheritance or geography that creates a new separate entity in need of Imperial recognition. They might also be created by the Imperial Court, sometimes as a reward for an individual samurai's great honor or service, or to create a family to assume responsibility for a particular location, task, or secret. [1]
Minor Clan Samurai[]
Minor Clan members should receive the same social respect as any other samurai from the Great Clans, but in practice, ignoring a Minor Clan samurai outside of their region of control carried few repercussions. [2]
Military[]
Each Minor Clan had the relative strength of a single Great Clan family. While some were more martial than others, few were able to field an army of any great strength. Only the Hare, Falcon, Dragonfly, and Mantis Clans had sizeable forces. The Minor Clans were largely protected by an edict of the Emperor, established when an aggressive and expansionist Lion Clan tried to seize the lands of the Fox Clan. [3]
