A Mempō was a full faced mask. [1] Many samurai wore a mempō to cover their face on the battlefield. They used a mempō partially for both protection and intimidation. A mempō was crafted from iron or leather, covered with lacquer or clay, and painted to resemble a face. While some mempō might had human features, most showcased jagged oni teeth, a ferocious mouth, and a frightening expression. [2]
