Gateway to Meido

Gateway to Meido

Meido, the Realm of Waiting, [1] was a Spirit Realm where the deceased await judgement [2] for reincarnation. [3] Its ruler was Emma-Ō, Fortune of Death and Judge of the Dead. [4]

Meido was depicted as a place filled with thick fog, where featureless plains and rocky hills gradually faded into a never-ending grey. It was a desaturated version of Ningen-dō, with comparable features, but ones devoid of life. [5] Meido had handsome and austere citadels, office blocks, and gateways. [6] At the center of this vast realm sat the estate of Emma-Ō, the Fortune of Death. This was the primary destination of the dead, where souls go to be judged. [7]

Day of Thunder[]

Yomi's impregnable borders had kept Jigoku's evils in check, but Fu Leng's fall into the underworld ruptured those borders. As Fu Leng, saturated in Jigoku's evil, increased his power and influence, Jigoku encroached further on Yomi. Then came the Day of Thunder. Because the Kami so loved the Thunders, they petitioned Heaven that the fallen Thunders might ultimately live alongside them in Heaven instead of risking corruption in Yomi. The stewards of the Heavens went further, transporting the entirety of Yomi and all its sorei into the sky, where Jigoku's defilements could not reach them. Yomi was safe, but the underworld was lost to Jigoku, save for Meido. Emma-Ō, his Kings of Hell, and their loyal mazoku descended from on high to reconquer the world below. They seized the levels now known as Meido, Gaki-dō, and Tōshigoku from the forces of Jigoku. [8]

Realm of Waiting[]

All Rokugani dead went to the level of Meido before their eventual reincarnation. In this gateway region the souls of the dead lined up to be counted, recorded, judged, and assigned to a reincarnation befitting their karma. Emma-Ō presided over this process with the help of his nine Kings of Hell. A king or subordinate judge read the soul's karma and assigned them to reincarnation in a form and realm that befitted their triumphs and shortcomings. Mazoku guards, scribes, judges, aides, bailiffs, and custodians facilitated the process, hoping to win a better reincarnation through loyal service in one of the universe's dirtiest jobs. [6]
