People |
Matsu Uji was a young daimyo of the Lion Clan.
Death[]
Uji married Shosuro Sushanume out of love instead of duty. His wife convinced Uji's karo, Sojuno, to kill his lord, but their plot was discovered by a maid, which led to the deaths of Uji, his wife and the karo. [1] His history was written as the Tragedy of Matsu Uji. [2]
Alternative Story[]
Other said that Sushanume was abused and neglected by her husband, and had fallen in love with Sojuno. The honorable samurai came to hate his lord for his abuse of Sushanume. When a jealous handmaiden betrayed the lovers, Sanjuro was forced to kill Uji in a duel. Overwhelmed with guilt at his dishonor, Sojuno then slew Sushanume and fell upon his own blade. [3]
Play[]
The tragedy of Uji's life was depicted in Matsu Sinoku's play Mercy, although the play was written from the preposterous point of view of his wife. [1]
