Matsu Chokoku

Matsu Chokoku

Matsu Chokoku was a bushi of the Lion Clan.

Demeanor[]

Level-headed and sturdy, Chokoku was trained in the Akodo halls. Nicknamed the “Old Mountain,” he was not a clever man, nor was he a great intellect, but his great strength and unyielding perseverance made him a name in his clan. Chokoku looked for the advantage in the moment, grasping almost instinctively when his opponent was slow or unsure, and capitalized on that weakness. [1]

Station[]

Chokoku was a high standing member of the Lion Clan who was known to have killed an oni single-handedly after it frightened off half his troops. He then ordered those who fled to commit seppuku. [2] He lived at Otosan Uchi in 1123. [3]

Hare Clan[]

In 1123 Chokoku tasked a small group of samurai with recovering a scroll in the possession of the Hare Clan. [2] The scroll had been stolen from Soshi Yukio, and the Scorpion Clan launched an army led by Bayushi Tomaru to retrieve it. [4] The scroll was actually a kolat message, [5] and the assault by the Scorpion army resulted in the destruction of the Hare Clan. [6]

Scorpion Coup[]

Chokoku was part of the Lion forces led by Matsu Tsuko who arrived at Otosan Uchi late in the second day of the Scorpion Coup. In the third day the Lion forces assaulted the Outer Southern Wall, at the Emperor's Gate. Matsu Gohei commanded the Akodo Deathseekers, alongside with Chokoku with his Lion Medium Elite Infantry, and Matsu Yojo with regulars. They were confronted by Bayushi Aramoro with his Bayushi Elite Spearmen, Yogo Asami and Bayushi Tangen with their Bayushi Ambushers, and Bayushi Kuritsu with his Ninja Bowmen. [7] Soshi Shugenja twisted their magic to defend the city, forcing Lion to retreat. [8]

Nanbu Family[]

After the Scorpion Coup the Nanbu family, vassal family of the Soshi, were to be judged alongside the rest of the Scorpion Clan. When in 1125 the Imperial Legions showed up at Shiro Nanbu and demanded Nanbu Daimyo, Nanbu Tsuchiya, could be questioned he appeared to commit seppuku with Matsu Chokoku gracing him by being his second. The Nanbu name was cleared but the family was disbanded. [9]
