Maro was a geisha who worked in the village of Mimura at the Blessings of the New Year, owned by the gentle Otaki. [1] Her parents had been died from a pneumonia and her younger son Tsuzen tended the familiar lands. [2] She was a smart and romantic woman, who flirted often with young samurai expecting to find a man who would honor her. [3]
