The Manticores, also known as sphinxes, were terrible monsters of the Burning Sands. [1]
Appearance and Demeanor[]
Manticores were known to take human form when they desired, but their true form resembled great hunting cats or birds of prey, or both together. They ate only human flesh and were said to take great delight in secrets, riddles, and wordplay. Their powerful magic was sometimes sought by sorcerers to learn their mystic arts. [1]
Sogdan[]
One of these creatures used its trickery and treachery to create fresh conflict whenever peace emerged in the internecine war among the Sogdan city-states located in the west of the Cradle of the World. The Qamarist Caliphate came to their aid, and clever Qamarist teachers bested the manticore at its riddle game, breaking its influence on the region. [1]
