Kuni Tokaji was a Crab Clan shugenja and tsukai-sagasu. He was the Kuni Daimyo long before the Kuni were dispersed by the Maw's attack. and the first Jade Champion. [1]

Taryu-Jiai Mission[]
Tokaji was a braggart when he talked of his skill with magic. He made it his mission to defeat shugenja of all other clans, challenging them to taryu-jiai. Tokaji defeated members of each of the clans save the Dragon and Phoenix, who both saw him as arrogant and declined to feed his ego. [1]
First Jade Champion[]
At a later Imperial Winter Court, Tokaji presented his achievements to the Emperor, saying that the Dragon and Phoenix feared his skill too much to test him. Tokaji impressed the Emperor so much that he was appointed Rokugan's first Jade Champion. [1]
