The Ki-rin, or unicorn, [1] was a mythical Rokugani creature and the symbol of the Unicorn Clan. [2] They were also known as Kirin, in some Rokugani stories and qilin in Yún Fēng Guó’s tales. [3]

Appearance and Demeanor[]

Tradition said that deer were the messengers of the kami, and thus were sacred. Ki-rin were benevolent and compassionate chimerical beasts with great antlers or horns, dragon scales, the tail of an ox, and a flaming mane which floated above the ground. It was whispered they came out of the deepest forests to speak to lone travelers. [4] It was believed that ki-rin were native to Tengoku, but they roamed throughout the Spirit Realms in herds. According to local folklore, they only appeared before the very virtuous and the very wicked, bestowing blessings on the former and curses on the latter. Phoenix texts claimed ki-rin could look into the hearts of mortals and knew their karma. Unicorn folklore said they were so compassionate they walked on air to avoid harming even the smallest blade of grass. [5] The Shrine of the Ki-Rin was built within the Phoenix lands to honor the creature. [6]
