Kawa was the Rokugani term for rivers, one of the main arteries that sustained the Emerald Empire. They carried food, mineral wealth, valuables, travelers, and soldiers throughout the provinces of the Empire. Travel by boat could be significantly faster than by road, and major cities had tended to develop along major rivers. Rivers that were too fast or treacherous for boating acted as important natural boundaries. [1]
