Katsuo was a heimin peasant who lived at Kurosunai Village-
Lost Family[]
Katsuo was son of Sanjiro and Maki. He had a dog, Takuhiro, and fallen in love with his childhood friend Tomoko. His mother, his friend Shiro, and the resident magistrate Yasuki Hikaru died in the village in 1123 during an attack of the Lost. Katsuo, Sanjiro, and Tomoko managed to survive, but he was supposedly tainted by the blood of one of the Shadowlands minions who Katsuo had killed. [1]
Fighting the Shadowlands Horde[]
Katsuo was forced to muster his courage and take up arms in an attempt to defend himself and his loved ones against the hordes of the evil. [2] He led a force of ashigaru during the Battle of Cherry Blossom Snow, where they faced the hordes of Akuma no Oni. In a week he learned how to maintain control of a unit, to disengage and then reform. [3] During the battle Hida Yakamo passed him a katana, an act which was seen by Matsu Tsuko, the Lion Champion. Tsuko crossed blades with Katsuo, expecting an easy kill, but the peasant managed to parry her. Amused by his natural movement Tsuko personally taught the first lesson of iaijutsu to Katsuo. [4] Akuma no Oni took the field, confronting the defenders, and Katsuo managed to injure the demon with the bolt of a ballista, while Akuma nearly killed the Mantis Champion, Yoritomo, and had slain the Dragon Champion Togashi Yokuni. [5] Eventually Shiba Tsukune, the Phoenix Clan Champion, killed the Oni Lord in personal combat. [6]
Rōnin[]
For his deeds Katsuo was elevated to samurai status as a rōnin and praised by relevant daimyō of the Great Clans, who offered him different possible allegiances. [7]
