Kaiu was one of the first retainers of Hida-no-Kami. [1]
Blacksmith[]
Kaiu had a deep knowledge on blacksmithing, teaching Doji Yasurugi about how to forge tsurugi. The finest of Kaiu's blades used three folds. [1] Tales of the Scorpion Clan told that Kaiu designed the dangerous maze known as Bayushi's Labyrinth which gave access to Kyūden Bayushi. [2]
Hida's Follower[]
After the Day of Thunder, as the clan and its defenses grew, the Kami sought out the strongest and most capable of his followers among the Crab to act as his lieutenants. He challenged his followers to prove that they were strong enough to stand beside him. Three stepped forward. The very first was Hiruma, a scout and hunter without equal. [3] Kaiu was the second to accept Kami Hida's challenge. And the shugenja Kuni was the third. Together, the trio embarked on a quest to slay Hajimeno Tatakai no Oni. Kaiu set to work crafting the weapon that would bring out the oni's demise, Kishu. [4] Working together, they had prevailed and were accepted as the founders of the great families within the Crab. The stations of their descendants still reflected his role within that legendary battle, providing the scouts. [5]
Kaiu Family Founder[]
Hantei, the first Emperor, ordered his brother Hida to defend against incursions from the vile realm known as the Shadowlands. Hida and his followers created the “First Wall,” a belt of fortifications—watchtowers, palisades, and bulwarks— designed to block attacks from the forces of Fu Leng. [6] Kaiu's forge acted as the heart of Kaiu Castle. Kaiu's spirit continued throughout the generations, giving rise not only to master smiths, but also to inventors and engineers. [7]
Legacy[]
Kaiu designed Kyūden Hida [8] and he also crafted Chikara for the gempuku of Hida's second son, Osano-wo. Because Kaiu took most of his forging secrets to the grave, the Kaiu family found it necessary to reverse engineer his techniques over the course of centuries, and Chikara was an essential part of that task.
