Daimyo: | Kaeru Shioko |
The Kaeru family was historically a ronin family that ruled the City of the Rich Frog, while the Unicorn Clan greatly ignored this holding. They were nicknamed Kaeru, for the Rokugani word of Frog. [1] The Kaeru family had never been recognized by an Emperor. Their "family name" was in fact more of a nickname than a formal title. [2]
Vassal of the Ikoma[]
When the Lion Clan laid claim to the city, the Kaeru, who had no strong allegiance to the Unicorn, offered to administrate the city for its new owners. In return they became a vassal family of the Ikoma. [3]
Kaeru Contractors[]
There was a Dojo within the City of the Rich Frog whose activity was a carefully maintained secret, but which was known to the Kaeru Daimyo, and permitted to survive due to its profitable revenue. [3] The Kaeru lent assassins for a price. [4]
War of the Rich Frog[]
During the War of the Rich Frog the Kaeru family thrived, giving the Kaeru opportunities to strengthen their hold on the city. They offered “protection” for the various shopkeepers, merchants, and peasants of the city. They simply refused to protect homes and businesses that failed to pay. [5]
Kaeru Daimyo[]
The following are the known daimyo of the Kaeru, both as a ronin family and a vassal of the Ikoma:
Kaeru Tomaru | ? - 1166 |
Kaeru Meiji | 1166 |
Kaeru Shioko | 1166 - Present |
See Samurai of the Kaeru for a complete listing of all members of the Kaeru family.
