Jizō, the Fortune of Mercy, [1] was said to roam the underworld comforting the dead as best he can. Families sometimes decorated Jizō statues with clothing, jewelry, or toys to honor children who died before their time. As a wanderer, Jizō was also the patron of travelers, featuring in many small roadside shrines. [2]

Appearance[]

Jizō was a smiling man in robes of mourning who was a common sight along the shore of the Blood River, the river which bordered Tōshigoku, the Realm of the Eternal Slaughter. Jizō and his servants waited there to soothe those who died unjustly and guided them across the river and back to Meido, where he pleaded with Emma-Ō on their behalf. Souls championed by the Fortune of Mercy used to receive lesser sentences. [3]
