Jellyfish poison caused dramatic effects even in small doses. It was a contact poison that caused severe chest pains, skin necrosis (death of the tissue), swelling in the throat and larynx, breathing difficulties and cardiac depression (slowing of the heart). Contact on the skin caused immediate irritation to such a degree that permanent scars were left behind. Death could occur within minutes. [1]
