Inari was the Fortune of Rice, [1] a fox deity with both female and male aspects, associated with good harvests and plentiful crops and was therefore very popular with farmers and peasants. It was common practice to thank Inari before eating and to leave them offerings after every harvest. Wild foxes were thought to be Inari's messengers, so Rokugani tended to treat them kindly. [2] Almost every farming village had a shrine to Inari. [3]
