People

Kaikoga Masami was a member of the Moth Clan who married into the Crab Clan as Hiruma Masami. [1]

Moth Clan[]

Masami, born a member of the Kaikoga family of the Moth Clan, a Minor Clan focused on studying the nature of Yume-dō, the Realm of Dreams, was trained as a shugenja. [1]

Demeanor[]

Masami was extremely intelligent, deliberate and analytical. Keen and insightful, she listened carefully while others speak, often looking into the distance as they do, as though deep in thought. [2]

Crab Clan[]

Masami married into the Hiruma family and assisted in the care of the temple located within Shiro Hiruma. [1]

Death[]

In 716, [3] an oni referred to as The Maw raised an army of unprecedented size and power. The Maw called numerous oni directly from the depths of Jigoku, including Atsumari no Oni, which was instrumental in conquering Shiro Hiruma, using its corrupt powers of resurrection to attack the castle. Masami realized the very souls of the Hiruma were in existential danger, so she performed a complex ritual that ensured that the souls of the last Hiruma to perish would be sent to Yume-dō, rather than become corrupted by Atsumari no Oni. The ritual was insufficient to save the castle, but it greatly reduced the power of Atsumari no Oni and saved the souls of hundreds of Hiruma samurai. Incensed at being thwarted, the oni turned its rage on Masami. She sacrificed her life to send the oni back to Jigoku and herself to Yume-dō. [4]

Ritual[]

Masami knew she could not make the outcome of her ritual permanent, for that would effectively halt the Karmic Wheel for the souls in question. Instead, she used three keys to enact the ritual, and these same three keys could, in turn, also unravel the ritual and end its effects. The keys were: the final passage of Masami's ritual, spoken aloud; the wakizashi of the Hiruma family daimyō; and finally Masami's name, which she surrendered to empower the ritual. Masami designed the ritual such that someone with the intent to end it could bring these three keys together within Shiro Hiruma to release the souls from Yume-dō and allow them to pass on to their judgment in Meido. In 1123 the mahō-tsukai Kitsu Sokori attempted the return of the oni, but a group of samurai avoided it. Because Masami was herself trapped in Yume-dō, she only had communicated with the party through their dreams, providing them helpful information. [5] Masami helped the samurai to rescue Hiruma Asahi, the Hiruma Daimyō's heir, who had been kidnapped to perform a ritual with him. [6]
