Hinin, also called burakumin, were at the very bottom of the Celestial Order. [1] The non-people were criminals, torturers, undertakers, butchers, and tanners. They were considered unfit as companions for samurai save in the direst of circumstances. Sometimes they were called by the pejorative term eta, a slur meaning “abundance of filth.” [2]
